Dance 2 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 5 Dance 2 unit is an engaging programme where pupils will delve into the dynamic world of street dance. Throughout the unit, they will acquire basic dance actions, moves, and positions, culminating in choreographed routines that they will perform. This builds on their previous experience with different dance movements and the ability to form dance phrases, both in choreographed and improvised forms. Pupils will also have had the chance to express their thoughts on their own and others' dance work, as well as the overall creative process of dance.
Structured into a series of lessons, the unit aims to develop pupils' body awareness, creativity, and choreographic skills, alongside improving their performance skills and appreciation for dance. Each lesson has clear objectives and success criteria, starting with learning basic street dance arm positions and movements, and progressing to performing in unison, first with partners and then in groups. By the end of the unit, pupils will be able to perform a fully choreographed street dance routine as a class. Teaching tips include safety considerations such as the use of gymnastics mats and the removal of shoes and socks, as well as suggestions for organising dance partners or groups to optimise learning.
