Max Maths, Year 5, Try it, Comparing and ordering numbers within 1000000
Maths Resource Description
In an exercise aimed at Year 5 students, Max Maths introduces a task to help them understand how to compare and order numbers up to one million. The exercise requires students to write numbers within a chart and determine which number is greater or smaller. Using comparison symbols such as less than (<) or greater than (>), students are encouraged to analyze the place values of ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands to compare two given numbers.
The activity presents two examples for the students to work through. In the first part (a), students are asked to identify the smaller number by placing the digits of each number into the correct columns of the chart and then using the appropriate comparison symbol. In the second part (b), they are tasked with finding the greater number through a similar process. The numbers provided for comparison are 532,399 and 489,020 in one instance, and 618,450 and 902,577 in another. This exercise helps to reinforce the concept of place value and the ability to compare multi-digit numbers, key skills in developing mathematical understanding at this level.
