Max Maths, Year 4, Learn together, Carroll diagrams
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 4 curriculum, students are introduced to Carroll diagrams—a useful tool for sorting objects or numbers into distinct categories. A Carroll diagram is divided into four sections, allowing for the classification of items based on two different criteria. For example, numbers between 1 and 12 can be sorted according to whether they are even or not even, and whether they are multiples of 3 or not. This creates a clear visual representation, with each number placed in the appropriate section of the diagram. As such, the numbers 6 and 12 would be found where 'Even' and 'Multiples of 3' intersect, whereas numbers like 2, 4, 8, and 10 would be grouped under 'Even' but 'Not multiples of 3'.
The interactive element of the lesson, 'Let's Try It', encourages students to apply their understanding of Carroll diagrams by sorting the numbers from 1 to 25. This time, the categories are 'Multiples of 5' and 'Not multiples of 5', as well as 'Odd' and 'Not odd' (which typically refers to even numbers). By engaging in this activity, students practice their skills in identifying multiples and distinguishing between odd and even numbers. The exercise not only reinforces their arithmetic abilities but also enhances their analytical skills in categorising and organising information logically.
