In the 'Max Maths' workbook for Year 3, students are presented with exercises on adding and subtracting volumes, specifically in litres and millilitres. For example, in one task, they are asked to complete a series of subtractions involving two different volumes. They break down the task by subtracting the litres and millilitres separately. In part (a), students subtract 3 litres and 704 millilitres from 6 litres and 845 millilitres. The process involves simple subtraction: first, they subtract the litres (6l - 3l), then they subtract the millilitres in segments (800ml - 700ml, 40ml - 0ml, and finally 5ml - 4ml). They also work with mixed units, adding litres to millilitres and subtracting smaller volumes from larger ones. For instance, they might add 1 litre and 540 millilitres to 216 millilitres or subtract 25 millilitres from 3 litres and 336 millilitres. Each problem is designed to help students become more fluent in handling measurements and understanding the relationship between litres and millilitres.
