Max Maths, Year 3, Learn together, Comparing and ordering fractions (1)
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 3 maths lesson from Max Maths, children are introduced to the concept of comparing and ordering fractions in a practical and visual way. Jade and Tya, two characters in the learning material, each start with a piece of paper which they divide into four equal parts. To illustrate fractions, the girls colour some of these parts. Jade colours three parts of her paper green, representing the fraction 3/4, while Tya colours two parts of her paper yellow, showing the fraction 2/4. By comparing the coloured sections, students can easily observe that Jade has coloured more of her paper than Tya.
The lesson helps students understand that 3/4 is greater than 2/4 because Jade has coloured more parts. Conversely, they learn that 2/4 is smaller than 3/4, as Tya has coloured fewer parts. This visual representation allows children to grasp the concept of comparing fractions by looking at the number of equal parts coloured on each piece of paper. The lesson is designed to be interactive and engaging, encouraging students to learn together and develop their understanding of fractions in a simple and relatable context.
