Fractions Target Boards
Maths Resource Description
The Fractions Target Boards resource is designed to enhance Year 6 students' proficiency with fractions through engaging and dynamic activities. The objectives of these exercises are multifaceted, aiming to develop students' ability to simplify fractions by identifying common factors, and to find common multiples that allow fractions to be expressed with the same denominator. The resource also focuses on advancing students' skills in comparing and ordering fractions, including those greater than one, as well as adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers by utilising the concept of equivalent fractions. Additionally, students will practice multiplying simple pairs of fractions and expressing the answers in their simplest form, along with dividing proper fractions by whole numbers.
Target Boards serve as an interactive tool to rehearse a variety of mathematical skills within short, focused sessions, ideal for starting or concluding a lesson and particularly effective for retrieval practice. Suitable for both whole class engagement or smaller group work, the boards are displayed for all students to see, who then use whiteboards and pens to perform calculations or identify answers that meet specific criteria. To cater to varying levels of ability and challenge different groups at the same time, educators can provide distinct instructions to each group. The pack includes an assortment of boards: four dedicated to proper fractions, four to mixed numbers, and two combining both proper fractions and mixed numbers. For instance, a teacher might challenge the class with a task such as finding two fractions on the board that together exceed three-quarters.
