Loop Card Game - Halving 3 digit numbers
Maths Resource Description
The Loop Card Game is an engaging educational activity designed to help Year 3 students develop their skills in halving three-digit numbers. This game comprises a series of cards, each showing a three-digit number followed by its halved result. For example, one card might display the number 339, and students are tasked with determining that half of this number is 169.5. However, the game is designed to use whole numbers, so typically the numbers chosen will result in whole number halves, such as half of 250 being 125.
Each card in the set provides a sequential challenge; once students find the halved value of the starting number, they look for the next card that begins with that answer. This creates a continuous loop of calculations. For instance, after halving 250 to get 125, they would then look for the card that starts with "Half of 250," and so on. The game includes a variety of numbers to halve, such as 112, 310, 720, and many more, offering a comprehensive practice session for students. With cards like "Half of 242 is 121" and "Half of 862 is 431," children are encouraged to work out the answers mentally, promoting quick thinking and reinforcing their understanding of halving numbers within the 3-digit range.
