Addition and subtraction within 10 - Find the difference - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Year 1 curriculum during the Autumn term, Week 9, Day 2 focuses on developing young learners' skills in addition and subtraction within 10. The children are invited to engage in a 'Fluent in Four' revision session which aims to reinforce their counting abilities. To participate in the activities, each child will need 10 cubes to use as a tactile aid for their calculations. One of the key exercises involves counting backwards from 10 to 0, a foundational skill that underpins subtraction.
The lesson continues with a practical task where the children are asked to find the difference between the numbers 10 and 4. By using their cubes, they can visually and physically calculate the difference, enhancing their understanding of subtraction. The children are encouraged to fill in the blanks with the correct answers, such as "The difference between 10 and 4 is 6" and "10 – 4 = 6". To further enrich their learning experience, the lesson includes a discussion element where they can talk about the number of legs different animals have, linking numerical differences to real-world contexts. This hands-on approach not only solidifies their mathematical knowledge but also helps them to apply it in various scenarios.
