Addition and subtraction within 10 - Parts and wholes groups of objects - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 1 mathematics lesson focusing on addition and subtraction within 10, students are introduced to the concept of parts and wholes using groups of objects. The session starts with a 'Fluent in Four' revision activity, where children are encouraged to practice their mental arithmetic skills. They are presented with simple equations such as finding half of 8 and then adding double of three, as well as adding 6 to 0. These exercises are designed to reinforce their understanding of basic addition and subtraction operations.
As part of the hands-on learning experience, children are provided with a variety of 3-D shapes and number shapes to explore. They are tasked with identifying which shapes can be stacked and are challenged to create different parts from the whole shapes. Additionally, the lesson includes a practical problem-solving task where students must decide which cup a teddy bear named Teddy B should use. They must use their number shapes to assist with calculations and consider the size of the cups in relation to the teddy bear, fostering their reasoning and critical thinking skills in a playful context.
