Progression pedagogy - Romans - Year 4
History Resource Description
In the Year 4 curriculum focused on the Romans, students explore the significant changes that occurred in Britain from the end of the Iron Age to the end of the Roman occupation. This unit of learning is structured to deepen pupils' knowledge and ensure long-term retention through a systematic approach known as 'link it, learn it, check it, show it, and know it'. This pedagogical progression framework is designed to guide students through a learning journey that begins before they encounter new information and continues beyond the completion of the unit.
Before the learning phase, 'link it' helps students connect new concepts to their existing knowledge. As they move into the 'learn it' stage during the learning process, they engage with the historical content, gaining a deeper understanding of how Roman influence altered British society, culture, and infrastructure. 'Check it' occurs at the end of the learning, allowing pupils to assess their understanding and teachers to evaluate progress. The 'show it' phase provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge, often through creative or practical activities that help solidify their learning. Finally, the 'know it' stage ensures that the information is not only understood but also remembered, forming a part of the students' long-term knowledge base. This progression framework is further explained in the 'Five stages of learning and remembering' document available through Focus Education's resources.
