Cops and robbers - What can you do at the seaside that you cannot do at home?

The "Cops and Robbers" activity is an engaging classroom exercise designed for groups of four pupils, aimed at exploring the unique experiences offered by the seaside which are not typically available at home. Initially, each pupil spends two minutes jotting down their own recollections in the left section of a chart, detailing activities that can be done at the seaside. Following this, they have a minute each to peruse the contributions of their peers, searching for any seaside activities they hadn't thought of themselves.

After reviewing the ideas from their group members, pupils can then 'steal' this newfound knowledge by adding it into the 'stolen knowledge' section of their chart. This collaborative part of the activity not only encourages sharing and learning from one another but also allows for a broader understanding of seaside activities. Each piece of information recorded, whether from their own recall or from their peers, is awarded two points, turning the exercise into a fun and competitive learning game. The entire activity is designed to take approximately 15 minutes, stimulating discussion on why being beside the seaside is such a pleasurable experience for many people.
