Use of 'a' or 'an' Quiz
English Resource Description
This KS2 Grammar Quiz, created by KS2Gems, is aimed at Year 3 students to help them understand the correct use of the indefinite articles 'a' and 'an'. The quiz contains 10 questions, each followed by an answer slide, and serves as a tool for retrieval practice after teaching the grammatical forms. It can also be used to assess pupil knowledge before teaching or as a starter activity. The accompanying teaching PowerPoint provides additional support for the concepts covered in the quiz.
The quiz addresses common questions such as when to use 'a' (before words beginning with a consonant sound) and 'an' (before words beginning with a vowel sound). It also includes exercises where students must choose the correct article to use in front of various nouns, such as 'a monkey' and 'an ice-cream', and sentences where they must insert the appropriate article. Further questions test pupils' understanding of the rules, including the fact that 'a' or 'an' is determined by the sound of the following word, not necessarily its initial letter. The quiz helps reinforce the idea that these articles are essential for the coherence of a sentence and are not interchangeable at the writer's whim.
