Use of 'a' or 'an' Presentation
English Resource Description
KS2Gems has developed a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation and activities for Year 3 students to learn the proper use of 'a' or 'an' in sentences. The resource pack is designed to be adaptable to the unique needs of different classes and includes a range of whole-class, group, paired, and independent activities. The level of support provided by these resources is left to the discretion of the class teacher, allowing for a tailored approach to grammar instruction.
The fundamental rule taught is that 'a' or 'an' is determined by the sound of the following word: 'an' is used before words that begin with a vowel sound, while 'a' is used before words starting with a consonant sound. This rule is illustrated with examples such as 'an armchair' and 'a table'. Exceptions to the rule are also covered, where some words starting with a consonant letter have a vowel sound (e.g., 'an hour') and vice versa (e.g., 'a university'). To reinforce learning, the presentation includes interactive challenges and exercises where students must choose the correct article to complete sentences, with answers provided for self-assessment. The final activity encourages students to find real-life examples from their reading materials, further embedding the grammatical concept.
