The Year 6 curriculum includes an engaging module centred around "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan, offering a comprehensive medium-term plan that encompasses comprehension, composition, and grammar and punctuation skills. In the first week, students focus on understanding and discussing the text, maintaining focus on the topic and using notes where necessary. They delve into narrative writing, drawing inspiration from the development of characters and settings they have read or seen performed. Additionally, they learn to use colons to introduce lists, enhancing their writing skills.

Subsequent weeks build upon these foundations, with students drawing inferences about characters' feelings, thoughts, and motives, and justifying these with evidence from the text. They explore narrative techniques, including the description of settings, characters, and atmosphere, and the integration of dialogue. The curriculum also covers a range of grammatical concepts, from understanding synonyms and antonyms to using passive verbs and relative clauses. Each week offers a unique focus, such as summarising key ideas, consistent tense use, and recognising formal vocabulary and structures, culminating in students recommending books and performing their own compositions with clarity and expression.
