Inspired by: The Arrival - Curriculum Objectives
English Resource Description
Year 6 pupils are encouraged to develop a positive attitude towards reading and a deeper understanding of various texts. The curriculum objectives guide them to continue exploring a broad range of literature, including fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction, and reference materials. They are taught to appreciate books with different structures and to read for diverse purposes, increasing their exposure to cultural stories, myths, legends, and classic and contemporary fiction. The curriculum also focuses on discussing and identifying themes, making comparisons across writings, and recommending books to peers with articulated reasons. Furthermore, pupils learn to memorise poetry and prepare dramatic readings, enhancing their comprehension through expressive intonation, tone, and volume.
Emphasis is placed on understanding texts by checking comprehension, discussing vocabulary in context, asking questions, drawing inferences, predicting outcomes, and summarising key ideas. Pupils also evaluate how language, structure, and presentation contribute to meaning and discuss the use of language by authors, distinguishing between fact and opinion. Writing skills are honed through planning, drafting, evaluating, and editing, with attention to grammar, vocabulary, cohesion, tense, and subject-verb agreement. Pupils are taught to apply their knowledge of morphology, etymology, and grammar, using dictionaries and thesauruses to refine their language. Handwriting instruction aims to develop legibility, fluency, and speed. Finally, comprehension activities involve exploring themes such as migration, character perspectives, and symbolism, while composition tasks include writing from different viewpoints, creating dialogues, and understanding narrative tenses.
