Week 3, lesson 5 Review Day: CVCC/CCVC - Phonics Phase 4 - Lesson plan

In the fifth lesson of Week 3, the focus is on reinforcing the children's understanding of reading and spelling CVCC (consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant) and CCVC (consonant-consonant-vowel-consonant) words. The objective is clear: to review the skills acquired in handling these word structures. The lesson begins with a 'Letter Pops' activity where children are given grapheme cards and are asked to respond to spoken phonemes by raising the corresponding card above their heads. This dynamic activity serves as a warm-up, revisiting the graphemes they have learned so far.

During the 'Teach' phase, the teacher writes a sentence on the board and models how to read it. To challenge the students' understanding, a word in the sentence is erased and replaced with a new one, prompting the children to determine if the sentence still makes sense. This exercise is repeated with different substitutions to provide varied practice. In the 'Practise' section, children participate in 'Word Match Lines', a game where they match object flashcards with their corresponding word flashcards, fostering both recognition and decoding skills. Finally, in the 'Apply' stage, the class works together to interpret an image and deduce the phrase it represents. The children are then asked to write the phrase on their whiteboards, allowing them to apply their phonics knowledge in a writing context.
