Dance - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of a Year 5 dance series, students aim to master a dance phrase incorporating movements and patterns from the traditional Haka. The lesson's objectives focus on performance in a group setting, following a choreographed sequence, and embedding the distinctive characteristics of the Haka into their dance. To achieve success, pupils must be able to work collaboratively to create a short dance phrase, follow the choreography, and integrate authentic Haka features. Essential vocabulary for the session includes terms like 'phrase', 'gesture', 'haka', 'unison', 'canon', and 'repetition', which are crucial for understanding the structure and execution of the dance.
The lesson begins with a warm-up where students engage in a 'Body Parts' activity, which involves forming groups and coordinating the number of body parts touching the floor as instructed by the teacher. This is followed by a transition to the main activity, where the class revisits the Haka theme. The teacher introduces key characteristics of the Haka, such as fierce facial expressions, chest puffing, knee bending, foot stamping, and strong arm movements, all performed in unison. Pupils then mirror the teacher's demonstrated positions and are encouraged to lead by demonstrating these expressions and gestures. The main activity culminates in group improvisation, where pupils refine and extend their Haka with personal touches and perform it for peer feedback. The lesson concludes with a cool-down that includes a repeat of the 'Body Parts' activity, stretching, and breathing exercises to relax the body after the energetic dance session.
