Gymnastics 1 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 3 Gymnastics 1 unit offers a comprehensive overview of gymnastic sequences that incorporate a variety of shapes and movements at low and medium levels. The unit is structured to help pupils develop their skills in performing sequences that include contrasting shapes, matching, mirroring, and linking. They will also learn to execute shapes in flight, both with and without apparatus, and will enhance their understanding of balances and rolls. This unit builds upon the foundational skills acquired in previous gymnastics units, with the expectation that pupils have some prior experience with shapes, balance, and sequence work, including how to make an entrance and exit.
Each lesson within the unit is designed with specific learning objectives and success criteria to guide pupils through their gymnastics journey. The first lesson aims to teach pupils how to perform short sequences using low and medium level shapes, while subsequent lessons focus on mirroring and matching techniques, creating sequences with contrasting shapes, and performing a range of shapes and balances on apparatus. Safety is a priority, with the use of gymnastics mats and adaptations for space and resources. The unit encourages creative thinking and peer learning, with pupils modelling and sharing their ideas through performances. The medium-term plan outlines the objectives for each lesson, ensuring that by the end of the unit, pupils can safely perform a variety of gymnastic elements with precision and control.
