Gymnastics 1 - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
In the initial lesson of a Year 3 gymnastics series, students are set to learn and perform a sequence incorporating both low and medium level gymnastic shapes. The lesson's objectives aim to enable pupils to understand and execute a variety of shapes, build upon their knowledge of sequences, and explore different speeds and styles of movement. The success criteria include the ability to dissect the characteristics of each shape, perform and enhance sequences, and utilise a range of shapes and balances in their movements. Key vocabulary terms such as 'entrance', 'exit', 'pike', 'tuck', 'dish', 'arch', 'straddle', 'fluidity', 'control', 'balance', and 'mirroring' are introduced to help students articulate their understanding and movements. Essential equipment for the lesson includes gymnastics mats and cones to facilitate the activities.
The lesson commences with a warm-up where the class teacher demonstrates signals for movement and stopping, followed by exercises like jogging, hopping, skipping, and running to prepare the students. The main section of the lesson focuses on medium level shapes, with the teacher modelling and students practising shapes such as the pike, tuck, dish, arch, and straddle. Pupils are encouraged through 'pupil talk' to discuss and compare the shapes. Sequences are then created by combining entrances, shapes, and exits, with the students refining their sequences for a performance. The lesson concludes with a cool-down activity involving matching and mirroring exercises, where pupils reflect on the shapes they have learned and their performances, fostering a deeper understanding of the skills practised during the session.
