Sequence of learning - Music 1 - EYFS
Music Resource Description
In the early years of education, Reception students are encouraged to explore music through a series of engaging activities that focus on listening, movement, and expression. As part of the Expressive Arts and Design curriculum, children are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse musical experiences that promote their imaginative and expressive development. They learn to listen attentively to various types of music, including traditional British folk tunes, jazz, pop, classical, soul, rock, and music from around the world, broadening their auditory horizons.
The proposed learning sequence involves inviting musicians to perform, discussing the dynamics of music such as changes in tempo, and encouraging children to express their feelings and responses to what they hear. As they listen, they are guided to talk about their preferences and to notice how music can fade, speed up, or evoke different emotions. Children are also prompted to move to the music in a way that reflects its tempo, enhancing their ability to link physical expression with auditory stimuli. In addition to these activities, the sequence includes the use of instruments in the outside area, allowing children to experiment with creating their own musical sounds. The key vocabulary introduced includes a variety of musical genres, enriching their language and understanding of music. This holistic approach aims to nurture children's ability to invent narratives, sing songs, and perform collaboratively, all while developing a deeper appreciation for music's rich and varied tapestry.
