In a Year 5 review of measuring length, students are encouraged to recall the various units of measurement that are commonly used to record different lengths. These units include millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m), and kilometres (km), each progressively larger than the last and suitable for measuring increasingly longer distances. The lesson aims to help students understand which unit is most appropriate for a given measurement task.

During the practice part of the lesson, students are presented with a series of objects and distances to measure, and they must choose the most suitable unit of measurement for each. For instance, they are asked to select the correct unit to measure the width of a pencil, the distance between two cities, the length of a classroom, and the diameter of a plate. By choosing from mm, cm, m, and km, students apply their understanding of length units to real-world examples, reinforcing their knowledge of when to use each unit appropriately.
