Max Maths, Year 5, Learn together, Review of units of length, mass and volume (3)
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Max Maths, Year 5' curriculum, students revisit and strengthen their understanding of different units of measurement, including length, mass, and volume. This particular review focuses on converting units within these categories. For example, to convert centimetres to millimetres, students learn that they must multiply the value in centimetres by 10. An illustrative example demonstrates that 23 centimetres is equivalent to 230 millimetres after performing the multiplication (23 cm × 10 = 230 mm).
Similarly, when converting units of mass from grams to kilograms, the students are taught to divide by 1,000. This is exemplified by converting 35,000 grams into 35 kilograms (35,000 g ÷ 1,000 = 35 kg). For volume conversions, such as litres to millilitres, the lesson instructs to multiply by 1,000, illustrated by converting 16 litres into 16,000 millilitres (16 l × 1,000 = 16,000 ml). Lastly, for length conversion from metres to millimetres, multiplication by 1,000 is again used, showing that 5 metres equals 5,000 millimetres (5 m × 1,000 = 5,000 mm). Students then get to apply these conversion rules in practice exercises where they fill in the blanks to convert between metres and kilometres, and grams and kilograms, reinforcing their understanding of these measurement units.
