Max Maths, Year 5, Work Book, Review of decimals
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 5 Workbook, students are given a comprehensive review of decimals through a series of practice exercises. The first practice focuses on understanding how to express parts of a whole as both fractions and decimals. Students are presented with a large square divided into 100 equal smaller squares. They are tasked with expressing the number of squares shaded in different colours as fractions of the whole square and then converting those fractions into decimal form. For example, they must identify the fraction and decimal representation for dark grey-coloured squares, light purple-coloured squares, dark purple-coloured squares, and light grey-coloured squares, ensuring they grasp the concept of converting fractions with denominators of 100 into decimals.
The second exercise reinforces the understanding of place value in the context of decimals. Students are asked to complete a series of statements by placing the correct value in the ones, tenths, hundredths, or thousandths place, as appropriate. This includes converting fractions into decimal form, where the denominator indicates the place value position of the last digit in the decimal. For instance, they will convert fractions such as 1/4, which becomes 0.25 in decimal form, and 6/23, which becomes 6.23 when written as a decimal. This exercise is designed to solidify the students' ability to work with decimals and understand the relationship between fractions and decimals, as well as the concept of place value up to the thousandths place.
