In the Max Maths curriculum for Year 4 students, the topic of adding multiples of 10 is explored in a way that makes it accessible and easy to understand. The concept is introduced with a 'Let’s Learn Together' section, which provides clear examples of how to add multiples of 10 by simplifying the process. For instance, to add 20 + 50 + 80, students are encouraged to first add the single-digit numbers that represent the tens place – 2 + 5 + 8. By rearranging these to 2 + 8 + 5, they quickly see that the sum is 15, which translates to 150 when considering the tens. Similarly, adding 10 + 60 + 90 is simplified by adding 1 + 6 + 9, resulting in 16, or 160 when multiplied by 10.

Following the learning section, students are invited to 'Let’s Practise' by adding sets of multiples of 10 in their heads, with examples like 20 + 70 + 30 and 40 + 60 + 60. This exercise helps reinforce the technique of adding the single-digit numbers first to make the process quicker and easier. To further solidify their understanding, students can engage in a fun game with a partner. They take turns saying numbers less than 10, with the goal of reaching a total of 30. The player who successfully calls out the number that brings the total to 30 wins a point. The game continues until one player accumulates 10 points, turning the learning process into an enjoyable and competitive activity that emphasises the ease of adding single-digit numbers to master adding multiples of 10.
