Max Maths, Year 2, Learn together, The relationship between consecutive units of time
Maths Resource Description
In the Year 2 curriculum under Max Maths, students explore the fundamental concept of the relationship between consecutive units of time. This foundational knowledge is crucial for understanding how time is structured and for developing time management skills. The lesson begins with the basic unit of time, seconds, and builds up to larger units. Students learn that one minute is made up of 60 seconds, and similarly, one hour consists of 60 minutes. The learning journey continues as they discover that a day is comprised of 24 hours, and a week is made up of 7 days.
Further expanding on this relationship, the lesson introduces the concept that approximately 4 weeks constitute a month, highlighting the slight variability in the number of weeks per month due to the calendar structure. Additionally, students are taught that there are 12 months in a year, completing the cycle of time units within a calendar year. To help visualise these relationships and apply their understanding, students are presented with a calendar planner. They can engage in practical exercises such as counting the days to an event, like a holiday, and equating it to the number of weeks, reinforcing the connection between days, weeks, and months in a real-world context.
