Max Maths, Year 2, Learn together, Doubling 2-digit numbers (1)
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 2 maths lesson, children are introduced to the concept of doubling 2-digit numbers, with a particular focus on multiples of 5. The term 'double' is explained as another way of saying 'multiply by 2'. For example, to double the number 5, you would perform the calculation 2 × 5 to get the result of 10. To help visualise and understand this process, Jade uses counting blocks as a practical method. She begins to fill in a table with multiples of 5 and their corresponding doubled values, starting with 5 doubled to 10, and continues with 10 to 20, 15 to 30, and so on, up to the number 50.
Samir, on the other hand, is working with 14 blocks and aims to double this amount in order to build a larger tower. To find the double of 14, he approaches the task by separating the number into 'tens' and 'ones'. This means he doubles the 1 ten to get 2 tens (20), and then doubles the 4 ones to get 8. By combining these doubled figures, he arrives at the total of 28 blocks. This methodical approach of breaking down the 2-digit number into tens and ones before doubling helps children to easily manage the task and reinforces their understanding of place value within the context of doubling numbers.
