Max Maths, Year 2, Try it, Estimating numbers to 100
Maths Resource Description
In Year 2, Max Maths introduces the concept of estimation, a fundamental skill that helps children develop their number sense. The "Try It" activity is designed to encourage students to make educated guesses about quantities and then verify their predictions by counting. The first exercise invites them to estimate the number of counting blocks presented to them. Students are asked to record their initial estimate and then count the blocks one by one to determine the actual number, allowing them to compare and evaluate their estimation skills.
The second part of the activity shifts focus to estimating the number of dots. Similar to the first exercise, children are prompted to make an estimate and then count each dot to find the exact count. This process not only reinforces the concept of estimation but also provides practice in careful counting. After completing these exercises, the children are directed to continue their learning by turning to pages 8 and 9 in their workbook. These hands-on activities are an engaging way for young learners to grasp the idea of approximation and understand the relationship between estimated and actual quantities.
