Line Graphs with errors
Maths Resource Description
The Line Graph Pack 2, created by KS2Gems in 2022, is an educational resource designed to help children understand and identify errors in line graphs. This pack includes a collection of line graphs that intentionally contain mistakes. Teachers are instructed to distribute these graphs to pairs of students, who are tasked with pinpointing both the correct elements and the inaccuracies present in the graphs. The activity encourages children to articulate the nature of the errors and contemplate whether they can be rectified. It is suggested that teachers may need to demonstrate this process with the entire class before students begin working on the task independently.
Within the pack, there are various themed line graphs, each with its own set of data points and scales. For example, one graph illustrates the temperature in a classroom over a week, comparing two different years with colour-coded lines for clarity. Another graph tracks the height of something over a span of days, while additional graphs display information such as ice cream sales over several days in July, the outcome of a race measured in metres over minutes, and even preferences for different types of pizza. Each graph is designed to engage students in critical thinking and to help them develop a keen eye for detail, as they learn to spot and understand the significance of errors in data representation.
