Tables with deliberate errors

KS2Gems2022 presents a unique educational resource for Year 3 students learning about statistics: a collection of 10 tables intentionally designed with errors to challenge and engage students. These tables cover a variety of topics, from weekly attendance by gender to favourite sports and holiday destinations, offering a diverse range of data for pupils to scrutinise and correct. For example, one table lists the number of boys and girls attending on each day of the week, with a missing value under the girls' column for Wednesday, inviting students to identify and discuss the mistake.

Another table explores the daily activities of boys and girls, such as gaming, sleeping, and school hours, with discrepancies that require attention, like the unusual amount of time allocated to eating. A sports table aimed at comparing Year 3 and Year 4 students' favourite sports includes an improbable figure for football, prompting a discussion on data accuracy. The resource also includes a table that shows the favourite holiday destinations of a group of adults, with totals that don't align with the individual counts for men and women. Additionally, a humorous table on pocket money expenditure lists items such as comics, sweets, and hair gel with contrasting amounts for 2019 and 2020, some of which are described in a non-numeric way. This pack is designed to help students develop critical thinking skills by identifying and correcting the errors in the tables, thereby enhancing their understanding of data representation and accuracy.
