Addition and Subtraction Sometimes Always Never
Maths Resource Description
In the "Sometimes, Always, Never" activity designed for Year 3 students, children are encouraged to critically evaluate mathematical statements related to addition and subtraction. This exercise, provided by KS2Gems, is an excellent way to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts and to practice using mathematical vocabulary. For each statement presented on the slides, students must decide whether the statement is 'sometimes true', 'always true', or 'never true'. They are also prompted to support their reasoning by finding examples or counterexamples that illustrate their thinking.
The activity goes further by offering extra challenges to enhance the learning experience. For statements that are 'sometimes true', children are tasked with explaining the specific circumstances under which the statement holds true. Additionally, they are invited to rephrase these 'sometimes true' statements to make them 'always true' or 'never true', thereby refining their comprehension of the concepts. This interactive approach serves as an engaging starter activity that not only promotes exploration of key mathematical principles but also allows children to actively engage with the material in a thoughtful and analytical manner.
