Multiplication and Division - 9 times tables and division facts - Starter
Maths Resource Description
As part of the Year 4 curriculum during the Autumn term, students are tasked with mastering their 9 times tables and corresponding division facts. The lesson includes a "Fluent in Four" revision section, which challenges students with quick-fire questions to consolidate their understanding of basic arithmetic operations. For instance, one question prompts the calculation of half of 156, then subtracting 3 tens and seven ones, which leads to the answer 41. This exercise not only reinforces mental arithmetic skills but also the comprehension of place value and the subtraction process.
Further activities encourage pupils to explore multiplication facts, such as identifying the number of lots of 9 and the product of 7 times a missing number, which is revealed to be 9, resulting in 63. In addition to numerical operations, the lesson also includes practical applications, such as adding the lengths of two wooden boards—one measuring 28 cm and 25 mm, and the other 37 cm and 16 mm. Students must combine these measurements to find the total length, which amounts to 65 cm and 41 mm. This exercise not only tests their addition skills but also their ability to work with mixed units of measurement. By engaging in these varied tasks, students enhance their mathematical fluency and problem-solving abilities.
