Multiplication and Division - 9 times tables and division facts - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the third week of Autumn term for Year 4, the focus is on mastering the 9 times tables and corresponding division facts. The lesson begins with a starter that encourages children to draw upon their existing knowledge of times tables to become adept with the 9 times table. They are taught to use simple strategies, such as understanding that each multiple of 9 is one less than the equivalent multiple of 10, to quickly derive related multiplication and division facts. The lesson aims to build fluency and confidence in using the 9 times table for multiplication and division, including scaling up to multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100.
During the lesson, a series of activities are introduced to reinforce these concepts. Firstly, children compare the 9 times table with the 10 times table, discussing and discovering patterns such as the sum of digits in multiples of 9. They are reminded to mentally check their answers by ensuring the digits add up to 9, except for the special case of 9 x 11. Further activities involve counting in multiples of 9, identifying multiples by their digit sum, and applying their 9 times tables knowledge to work out larger products such as 200 x 9. A variety of resources, including counters, worksheets, and presentations, support the learning process, and children are encouraged to reflect on the skills they've used and the strategies that have helped them. Differentiated learning sheets cater to varying levels of understanding, ensuring that all children are challenged appropriately, from working towards the expected level to achieving greater depth in their understanding of the 9 times tables and division facts.
