Multiplication and division - The 5 times table - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The Year 3 curriculum for Autumn includes a focus on multiplication and division with Week 1 centred around mastering the 5 times table. The lesson plan is structured with a small step starter to recap counting in 5s and an understanding of the 2 times table, emphasising the inclusion of zero and the concept of equality. Independent learning activities are supported by differentiated sheets, teaching slides, concrete resources, and a number line in increments of 5. Key vocabulary such as 'multiplication', 'division', 'counting', 'equals to', and 'represent' is introduced, with resources available to reinforce these terms.
During the lesson, students are encouraged to engage in partner work to articulate their understanding of the 5 times table. They will explore how many groups of 5 are in a given number, with activities designed to use concrete resources or a number line to visualise the concept. Reasoning and problem-solving exercises challenge the children to consider the properties of odd and even numbers, the relationship between the 2 and 5 times tables, and the use of bar models and arrays in multiplication. Reflective questions prompt students to consolidate their learning, and differentiated outcomes are outlined for those working towards, at expected level, and at greater depth, ensuring that all students can progress and apply their knowledge in various contexts, including word problems.
