Place value - Numbers to 1,000 - Starter
Maths Resource Description
On Day 4 of Week 1 in the Autumn Term for Year 3, students are introduced to a series of mathematical exercises designed to strengthen their understanding of place value and numbers up to 1,000. The starter activity prompts children to perform simple division calculations such as dividing 60 by 10. Following this, they are encouraged to engage in the 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise which includes additional division problems like 75 divided by 5, helping to consolidate their division skills.
The lesson also includes a segment on identifying whether shapes are divided into equal or unequal parts, enhancing their geometric knowledge. Students are then asked to name different shapes, such as cones, cuboids, cylinders, and triangular prisms, which broadens their vocabulary and understanding of three-dimensional figures. The activity further explores counting and representing numbers both numerically and in words, as students count sets of 100 and write down the total amount. For example, five sets of 100 are counted and recorded as the numeral 500 and in words as 'five hundred'. It's an interactive way to combine place value knowledge with basic arithmetic and geometry.
