Time - Find durations of time - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In a series of engaging activities, students are taught how to calculate the duration of time between two events. The concept of 'duration' is introduced, prompting students to consider where they have previously encountered the term. The first activity requires students to identify the start and end times of an event and then calculate how long the event lasted. For instance, if an event starts at 10 o'clock and ends at 20 minutes past 10, students will determine that the duration is 20 minutes. The lesson is designed to encourage discussion, with students invited to share their methods of calculating time durations and to explore different approaches to these calculations.
As the lesson progresses, students are presented with more complex scenarios. They are asked to decide whether Rosie should take a bus or a train to reach Brighton by 6 o'clock, considering the duration of each journey. In another activity, they observe a sequence of times recorded every half hour by Leanna, such as quarter past 2 and quarter to 3, and they are challenged to explain the pattern. The lesson also includes a practical task where students create a timetable for Malachi's birthday party, fitting in various activities within an eight-hour span. This exercise not only reinforces their ability to find durations but also allows them to practice planning and time management. Independent work further consolidates their understanding, as students complete tables to show the duration of time represented by clocks and compare timetables for events to see if they align.
