Properties of shape - Count sides and 2D shapes - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The Year 2 geometry lesson on counting sides of 2D shapes is designed to help children identify and count the sides of various shapes, enhancing their understanding of shape properties. The lesson starts with a recap of previous learning, where children match shapes to the number of sides they have. They are encouraged to discuss and define what a 'side' is, and to identify and count the sides of different shapes, both regular and irregular. The class teaching input includes activities that prompt children to identify sides on 2D shapes, recognise that four-sided shapes can vary in appearance, and complete a table by correctly counting and recording the number of sides on given shapes.
For independent learning, the lesson provides differentiated activities that range from simple shape identification to more complex tasks involving irregular shapes and total side counting from a combination of shapes. Problem-solving exercises encourage children to construct hexagons and octagons, differentiate between squares and rectangles, and compare shapes based on the number of sides. The plenary session includes a 'Give me five' reflection activity, where children articulate what they've learned, the skills they've used, and what they found challenging. Misconceptions are addressed by presenting shapes in various orientations, ensuring children understand that the orientation does not affect the number of sides. The lesson materials, which cater to different levels of understanding, aim to solidify the children's knowledge of 2D shapes and their properties.
