Multiplication and division - Make equal groups - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Make equal groups' starter activity for Year 2 students, during the Spring Term's first week, day two, children are introduced to foundational concepts of multiplication and division. They are presented with a series of engaging tasks designed to develop their numerical fluency and understanding of mathematical operations. The 'Fluent in Four' revision section offers quick-fire challenges such as subtracting two numbers, for example "64 – 38 =", and more complex problems like "Ninety-four – 6 tens and 7 ones =", which encourage mental arithmetic and reinforce the place value system.
The lesson also includes practical sorting exercises, where students are asked to order objects from the lightest to the heaviest, aiding their comprehension of weight comparison. Additionally, they are tasked with identifying and describing equal groups, as well as recognising shapes such as pyramids among a collection of objects, which supports their geometric knowledge. These activities are not only designed to bolster their mathematical skills but also to stimulate critical thinking and reasoning in a way that is accessible and enjoyable for young learners.
