Maths Resource Description
In the Year 2 mathematics lesson from Autumn Term, Week 10, Day 1, students are encouraged to engage with a variety of numerical and measurement challenges. The lesson begins with a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise, where pupils complete part-whole models to demonstrate their understanding of number relationships and calculations. They are tasked with doubling numbers and adding units, such as doubling 21 and then adding 17, as well as performing simple addition like combining 64 and 26. This exercise not only reinforces their arithmetic skills but also helps them recognise patterns and relationships between numbers.
Furthermore, the lesson incorporates practical measurement activities where students use a ruler to determine the heights of various coloured blocks, enhancing their understanding of length and the use of standard units. They are also asked to identify the sequence of coloured beads, with questions prompting them to state the colour of the 3rd, 9th, and 2nd beads in the sequence. This activity aims to improve their counting skills and ability to follow ordered lists. To complete the measurement task, students must compare the heights of the red and blue blocks, recording their observations and identifying which block is the tallest. These exercises are designed to be interactive and hands-on, fostering a deeper comprehension of basic mathematical concepts among the young learners.
