Money - Count money pence - Planning
Maths Resource Description
The curriculum for Year 2 in the autumn term includes a unit on Measurement: Money, where students learn to recognise and utilise the symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p), combine amounts to make a particular value, and find different combinations of coins that equal the same amount of money. The lessons are designed to enhance problem-solving skills in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money within the same unit, including giving change. Key vocabulary such as money, coins, pounds, pence, and value are integral to the unit, with resources like differentiated worksheets, teaching slides, and real money to facilitate learning. Students engage in activities like counting in multiples and identifying coins, while also learning to express amounts using 'p' for pence, akin to how 'cm' is used for centimetres.
As part of their independent learning, students explore various reasoning and problem-solving tasks. They investigate the total value of different coin combinations and apply reasoning to determine the highest and lowest possible amounts. The teaching input also addresses common misconceptions, acknowledging that many children may not have firsthand experience with cash and coins due to the prevalence of card transactions. The concept of change and the value associated with each coin can be challenging, hence the use of number lines and correct language modelling is encouraged to support understanding. The plenary session includes a reflective "Give me five" activity where students assess what they've learned, the skills they've used, and what they found tricky, ensuring they remember key lessons from the day's activities. Differentiation is provided for varying levels of understanding, from working towards the expected level to achieving greater depth in counting and comparing coin values.
