Money - Select money - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the Year 2 Autumn term, students embark on a journey through the world of money, focusing on the skill of selecting the correct currency to reach a given total. The lesson is underpinned by a variety of resources, including differentiated activity sheets and informative teaching slides, all aimed at enhancing the children's understanding of money. Key vocabulary such as 'money', 'coins', 'pounds', 'pence', and 'total' is introduced, with additional support available through vocabulary cards and definitions. The lesson is structured to encourage independent learning, with students completing 'fluent in four' questions and solving puzzles that challenge them to find totals for rows and columns of numbers.
Students are encouraged to apply their previous knowledge of money, selecting appropriate coins or notes from a range to reach a specified amount. They practice practical, visual, and abstract representation of money, working with both pounds and pence to solidify their understanding. Partner work is utilised to foster discussion and explanation, with children using full sentences to articulate their reasoning. Activities in the presentation guide them through the process of making up amounts, such as 15p or 30p, using tens and ones, and exploring different combinations of coins. Reasoning and problem-solving exercises challenge students to think critically about making specific amounts with limitations, such as only using silver coins or finding various ways to make 90p. The session concludes with a reflection on the skills learned and a promise to remember the key concepts, with differentiation provided to cater to students working towards expected levels, at expected levels, and those capable of greater depth understanding.
