Addition and subtraction - Bonds to 100 tens and ones - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In an engaging mathematics session designed for Year 2 pupils during the Autumn Term, Week 9, Day 2, the focus is on reinforcing addition and subtraction skills, specifically mastering bonds to 100 with tens and ones. The lesson starts with a 'Fluent in Four' revision activity, prompting students to quickly solve subtraction problems such as 29 minus 10, and a more complex challenge involving the double of a number, like 45 minus double 11. This serves as a warm-up to get the young learners ready for the main tasks ahead.
With practical application in mind, the children are asked to draw coins to represent different amounts, such as 10p and 13p using 5p and 1p coins, which not only helps them understand the value of money but also the concept of number bonds. Additionally, the pupils are tasked with writing six number bonds for the number 20, providing them with a solid foundation in recognising how two numbers can be paired to make a total. Examples are given to guide them, such as 1 + 19 = 20 and 2 + 18 = 20, and so on, up to 6 + 14 = 20. This exercise is crucial in developing their mental arithmetic and preparing them for more advanced mathematical concepts.
