Time - Days of the week - Planning

Year 1 students embark on a journey through time, focusing on the days of the week during their summer term. The lesson is designed to familiarise them with the sequence of days and the concepts of 'today', 'yesterday', and 'tomorrow'. Utilising resources such as worksheets, presentations, and mini whiteboards, the children engage in a variety of activities that encourage them to recall and understand the order of the days. The lesson begins with a discussion on the key vocabulary, potentially accompanied by a song to help memorise the days. In one activity, children work in pairs to fill in missing days on their whiteboards. Another activity involves exploring calendars to identify special dates and discuss the months of the year, including their own birthdays and significant events.

The lesson plan includes reasoning exercises to deepen the children's understanding of the calendar. They work together to identify errors in the sequence of months and determine the weekday for a given date in July. Additionally, they categorise the days into school days and non-school days. Throughout the lesson, key questions prompt the children to think about the current day, the previous day, and the following day, as well as their personal connections to the months.
