Place Value within 20 - Order groups of objects - Starter
Maths Resource Description
In the Year 1 Autumn Term maths lesson taking place in Week 12, Day 3, students are introduced to place value within 20 through engaging activities that involve ordering groups of objects and understanding the value of numbers. The lesson starts with a 'Fluent in Four' revision exercise, where children are encouraged to circle the greatest number from given mathematical statements. For example, they need to calculate the result of doubling nine and adding half of four, as well as adding fifteen to five. This exercise not only reinforces their understanding of basic arithmetic but also helps them recognise larger numbers within the context of 20.
Diving deeper into the lesson, the children get hands-on experience by using three-dimensional shapes such as a cube, cylinder, and triangular prism to create prints. They are tasked with determining which sets of shapes have the same amount when printed. This practical activity not only helps them with counting and comparison but also introduces them to basic geometry by identifying and using different 3-D shapes. To further develop their understanding of shapes and their attributes, the children are asked to choose the correct shape based on the desired pattern for their picture, selecting between shapes that will create circles and those that will create triangles. This interactive approach to learning combines mathematical concepts with creative expression.
