Sequence of learning - Changes in family - EYFS
History Resource Description
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children begin to explore the concept of 'Changes in Family' as part of their understanding of the world, with a focus on history. Reception-aged children are encouraged to make sense of their own life stories and family histories. This involves engaging with photographs and memories, and sharing stories told by their parents about their lives and familial past. The learning sequence also prompts children to consider the differences in life experiences between themselves and older generations, such as their grandparents.
The learning objectives for this topic are designed to help children become familiar with concepts of time, such as understanding the terms 'new' and 'old'. They will recognize that people come in different ages and that they have gained more independence since they were babies. Through activities like looking at family photographs from different eras and listening to stories from grandparents about their childhood toys, children learn to identify changes over time. Key vocabulary such as 'yesterday', 'before', 'family', and 'last week' is introduced to help children articulate their understanding of past and present. The sequence of learning aims for children to talk about events in their own and family members' lives, appreciate family customs and routines, and understand that families, communities, and traditions can be diverse and unique.
