Assessment - Celebrations - EYFS
Geography Resource Description
In the context of early years education, the assessment of 'Celebrations' is an important aspect that helps practitioners understand how children perceive and engage with various cultural and religious festivities. During observations, educators look for specific indicators of learning and understanding in pupils. One key aspect is the recognition by children that despite having similarities, they also possess unique differences that set them apart from others. This understanding is fundamental in fostering a sense of identity and belonging.
Additionally, educators assess whether children are aware of the diversity that exists in terms of places, objects, materials, and living things. It's crucial for children to demonstrate sensitivity and empathy towards the needs and feelings of others, and to be able to build positive relationships. Knowledge of the variety of religious and cultural practices, including the understanding that different religions and cultures celebrate distinct special days, is also a vital learning outcome. Recognising that family events can be celebrated differently and that some peers may observe special days that are different from their own is a part of developing respect and appreciation for diversity from a young age.
