Sequence of learning - People who help us - EYFS
Geography Resource Description
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children explore the topic of 'People who help us' as part of their understanding of the world, focusing on people, culture, and communities. Reception-aged children are encouraged to show interest in different occupations and consider the roles of various individuals who assist us in daily life. Educators facilitate this by inviting guests from diverse professions, such as plumbers, farmers, vets, emergency service workers, and authors, to visit and share their experiences. This exposure helps children learn new vocabulary related to these occupations and challenges societal stereotypes, including those based on gender.
The learning sequence involves discussions and activities that help children identify the people who support them at home, school, and within the wider community. Parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, headteachers, and lunchtime supervisors are some examples of the roles highlighted. Visits to or from community helpers are organised to provide real-life context and understanding. Key vocabulary such as 'police officer', 'nurse', 'firefighter', 'ambulance driver', 'teacher', and 'dentist' is introduced and reinforced. Through these activities, children learn to appreciate significant people in their lives and the various ways they contribute to their wellbeing and the community. They also reflect on their own roles in helping others, fostering a sense of responsibility and community awareness.
