Check it! - South America - Year 5
Geography Resource Description
In a series of educational activities aimed at Year 5 students, the topic of South America's main features is explored with a focus on ensuring that children regularly review what they have learned. The materials suggest various methods for students to engage with the content, such as a 'brain dump', where they write down everything they know about a subject, or adding information to a mind map to visually organize their thoughts. Other strategies include 'Give me FIVE!', where students list five relevant items, such as South American countries or capital cities, and 'Expand and Elaborate', encouraging them to delve deeper into specific topics like the issues faced by 'street children' in Brazil or the continent's rugged geographical features.
The resources also include a 'CHECK IT!' section, which prompts students to recall and list South American countries, capital cities, important rivers, and mountains, as well as states in Brazil and the colours of the Brazilian flag. The activities are designed to cater to different levels of difficulty, with the expectation that all pupils can answer the simpler questions, while the more challenging ones are aimed at testing their deeper knowledge and understanding. The 'Pyramid Check' is a tiered approach to reviewing knowledge, with the bottom two rows containing fundamental questions that all students should be able to answer, and the third row presenting a more advanced challenge to stretch their learning.
