Dashes and Hyphens SATs Style Questions
English Resource Description
KS2Gems has crafted a set of 5 SATs style questions to enhance students' understanding of dashes and hyphens in English grammar. These questions are designed to mimic the style of questions from past SATs papers, allowing students to familiarise themselves with the format and types of punctuation challenges they may encounter. The first question asks students to identify the correctly punctuated sentence involving the use of a dash, while the second question requires the insertion of hyphens into a given sentence to correctly join compound adjectives. Each question is followed by an answer slide for immediate feedback.
Further exercises include determining where to insert a hyphen in a sentence where a well-known phrase is used, and identifying the correct placement of a dash in a sentence to separate independent clauses. The fifth question presents multiple sentences, prompting students to tick the one which uses a dash correctly. These activities can be used as starter activities to assess knowledge or for retrieval practice. Teachers are provided with notes and guidance on how to best utilise these questions in their lessons, ensuring that students gain confidence in their punctuation skills, particularly in the use of dashes and hyphens.
