In Session 8 of "Darwin's Dragons," Covington has been on the island for three days, awaking on the fourth. He takes a boat to the flamingo lake to evade sea lions and detects volcanic activity by the smell of rotten eggs. Covington delays his departure, not wanting to leave without Farthing, convincing himself he needs provisions. Lighting a fire, he feels a sense of pride and growing self-confidence. Farthing persuades him to follow her by growling, grabbing his clothes, staring, and howling. Covington sacrifices his fiddle case to create light for visibility.
