The Invisible Man - Lesson 5 - Lesson Plan

In Lesson 5 of the English reading curriculum focused on play study, students delve into the intricacies of character analysis through an exploration of "The Invisible Man". The learning objective is to equip students with the skills needed to analyse characters in depth and detail. This is achieved through a combination of reading, discussion, and a character analysis task. The lesson is structured to assess progress by having students complete an extended written response about a character from the play.

The expected outcomes of the lesson are tiered to accommodate different levels of understanding. All students must gain a basic understanding of how to write an extended answer about a character. They should aim to secure this understanding, while some could also gain further insight into the process. Differentiation opportunities are provided, including the ability to edit or adapt the PowerPoint presentation and balancing teacher guidance with independent learning. The lesson begins with a 10-minute starter activity to recap the events of Act 1, Scene 1 and the characters Kemp and Griffin. The main teaching activity spans 40 minutes and is split between a pair activity to write an extended P.E.A.R. (Point, Evidence, Analysis, Response) response and a whole-class reading and discussion of Act 1, Scenes 2, 3, and 4. An extension activity called Two Stars and a Wish allows for additional engagement. The plenary, lasting 10 minutes, involves completing the extended response, which could also be assigned as homework.
